Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study uses video clips from 1970s school integration interviews with high school students to elicit current individuals' feelings and connections regarding race and education. It examines historical student narratives to uncover how integration unfolded in daily life. The research questions guiding this study are: (1) How do contemporary individuals interpret historical video representations of school integration, and (2) What does this reveal about current perceptions of race and education? Using video data analysis and Critical Race Theory (CRT), the study analyzes footage and participant reactions. Findings reveal diverse experiences shaped by race, highlighting systemic challenges and socioemotional impacts influencing students’ well-being. The study provides recommendations for policies and practices to promote ongoing efforts toward equity.
