Abstract

Mentoring new scholars is one of the most important aspects of academic life. In this paper, we look at mentoring in the context of an NSF grant. One of the goals of the project was to establish a system of multi-tier mentorship to promote multiple mentoring relationships between faculty mentor, post-doc, graduate students, and undergraduates. In this paper, we present reflections from both the faculty and postdoc about their mentorship experiences, an analysis of the key mentorship activities presented in each reflection, and observed benefits for the research team. Finally, we present a revised multi-tier mentorship plan that leverages meetings and communication to provide mentorship for professional development, research & career development, research support, accountability & feedback, and psychosocial support.
