Redefining Campus Climate for Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2F

Abstract

Currently, the concept of campus climate centers on historically White institutions (HWIs) and fails to consider the unique history, mission, structure, and student make-up of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This presentation will highlight an empirical mixed methods study that centers HBCUs to examine HBCU campus climate. The findings to be shared include a more concrete conceptualization of campus climate for HBCUs, how they cultivate a campus climate to support student success, and what gaps and needs exist to support improved campus climate at these institutions.
