For decades, educational video games (EVGs) have been touted as a solution for many educational issues. However, despite research demonstrating the efficacy of game-based learning, it is still underutilized by practitioners. There are a number of reasons, including lack of teacher preparation, poor quality EVGs, and restrictive policies/practices. In this conceptual paper, we draw from interviews and observations from an ongoing project to help teachers evaluate EVGs for classroom use. We argue that a better approach would be an open educational resource to allow teachers themselves to rate games, share strategies for teaching, and remix resources. By facilitating discussion and collaboration among teachers passionate about game-based learning, we might be able to move both practice and theory forward.
