Racial Trauma, “Hidden Injuries,” and “Healing Methodologies”: Embracing Participatory Arts-Based Methodologies With Students of Color

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

In the current neoliberal governance of education, while the psychological, emotional, socio-cultural, and spiritual costs of internalized racism remain unaddressed in school, when internalized racial oppression (IRO) is embodied by Youth of Color, they become “psychologically homeless” (Hardy, 2023, p. 208). The intent of this methodological paper is to advance an anti-racist research agenda to address issues of IRO, advocating for education, arts-based, social justice-driven, and psychology researchers to work across disciplines in partnership with schools to implement innovative participatory art-based approaches as “healing methodologies” for Youth of Color to address the taboo of racial trauma; to dismantle the systems of racism and oppression impacting the lives of Youth of Color; and to embrace race-consciousness-raising efforts for social justice.
