Toward a Redistributive Ethic in Teacher Education

Abstract

I work to articulate a vision for teacher education that is focused on the project of redistribution, of moving material goods and services towards those who have been historically marginalized and dispossessed. I then shift to a discussion of ways that much of our humanizing desires for authentic critical work gets stuck at the conceptual level –we stall out at the point of attempting to convince others to share our perspectives rather than acting in ways that function to materially shift resources and impact the life chances of historically marginalized people. I offer three principles for future work in teacher education on the side of humanization: teacher education as additive; teacher education as asset-based; and teacher education as experimental.
