In this study, we draw on two existing frameworks (SAFE & FATE) as well as Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory to explore equity issues within artificial intelligence in education (AIEd). Building on the relevant discourses and practices in this field, we propose a SAFE ecological education framework as a tool for reference along the lines of gender, ethnicity, multilingualism, and socio-economic status using an integrated approach. We then address the dynamics and requirements of higher education that can be used to guide and inform the ethical and responsible use of AIEd. The newly proposed SAFE ecological education framework focuses on the development of technology-human systems to optimize human performance and well-being and restore fairness for students in higher education.
