Teachers’ Perceptions of Their Students’ Digital Citizenship and Practices (Poster 38)

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Students spend considerable time online, playing games, communicating, and learning. Even so, little is known about teachers’ perceptions of whether students exhibit appropriate and responsible digital behavior. To address this issue, 1224 randomly selected Grades 4 to 9 teachers were surveyed about their students’ digital citizenship. Teachers slightly agreed students used digital resources responsibly, and grade taught, preparation to teach digital citizenship, purpose for engaging in online activities, and attitudes towards digital reading and writing predicted their views of students’ digital responsibilities. Teachers also slightly agreed students applied good digital use/etiquette, and preparation to teach digital citizenship, purpose for engaging in online activities, importance doing so, and attitudes towards digital reading and writing predicted their views of students’ digital use/etiquette.
