A Study of Generation Z’s Interest in the Teaching Profession

Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Declining interest in teaching, fewer people completing preparation programs, turnover and more retirements are contributing to a shrinking supply of qualified teachers. In this presentation, we explore factors related to recruitment and retention of Generation Z teachers. This mixed methods study of Generation Z teacher candidates and current teachers in Tennessee and Kentucky reveals six significant findings including the importance of early recruitment, the increase in alternative, non-traditional pathways to teaching, and Gen Zs feeling prepared and supported as novice classroom teachers.
