Declining interest in teaching, fewer people completing preparation programs, turnover and more retirements are contributing to a shrinking supply of qualified teachers. In this presentation, we explore factors related to recruitment and retention of Generation Z teachers. This mixed methods study of Generation Z teacher candidates and current teachers in Tennessee and Kentucky reveals six significant findings including the importance of early recruitment, the increase in alternative, non-traditional pathways to teaching, and Gen Zs feeling prepared and supported as novice classroom teachers.
