A Model for Student Success: Collective Intervention With Black Males at “X” Community College

Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3E

Abstract

At “X” Community College, the three-year completion rate for Black male students remains at a mere seven percent despite the supportive programs provided to students (TBR, 2023). Our investigation into the factors influencing the persistence of Black male students at “X” Community College revealed augmented strategies involving the community to enhance their academic completion and ongoing retention.

We examined the relationships between student engagement, college GPA, and persistence using longitudinal retrospective data for students attending 7 campuses across Nashville, TN (n=14,161). Data sources also include student-level information from the most recent Community College Survey of Student Engagement, Focus Groups with Black male students on two campuses, and surveys administered to Black males during the Fall 2023 semester.
