Teacher Voice on Social Media: #TEACHERSOFTIKTOK

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2H

Abstract

This study analyzed social media content on TikTok to determine what teachers are saying about their experience and to uplift teachers’ voices. A framework of elevating marginalized voices, content analysis, and narrative inquiry were used to find commonalities and differences in teacher experiences across content areas, grade levels, and districts. Results indicated teachers used social media to bring attention to how teachers deal with frustrations related to work demands, professional development, admin concerns, and most importantly, student behavior. Concerns related to pay were noticeably absent. Teachers used social media to build a supportive community and relied on humor as a protective factor.
