Theorizing and Refining a Conceptual Framework to Support Black Immigrant Identity Navigation

Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 303

Abstract

Despite the increasing number of Black immigrants arriving from various parts of the world, the representation of their identities remains limited, with dominant narratives being told about them rather than by them. It is, therefore, essential to explore strategies that empower Black immigrants to author their own narratives, particularly within educational contexts. The Black Immigrant Identity Designing (BIID) conceptual framework is a valuable tool that aims to deepen understanding of how Black immigrants navigate their identities and design supportive programs for this process. The BIID also facilitates the amplification of Black immigrant voices in its own refinement. Notably, participant feedback has led to significant refinements in the BIID, particularly in restructuring the categories used to position Black immigrant identities.
