The WRITE Project: An Intervention to Improve Writing Skills Among Alaskan High School Students (Poster 1)

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

The Writing and Revising Interventions to Excel (WRITE) project was designed to increase Alaskan students’ argumentative writing skills to better prepare them for the type of writing needed for postsecondary success. The project developed learning maps as the foundation of the intervention so that professional development, instructional resources and coaching were based on a strong learning science research base. The project evaluation examined changes in teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, self-efficacy and outcome expectancy for teaching argumentative writing, and student perceptions of their writing engagement and preparation for post-secondary writing demands. The evaluation findings support prior work demonstrating that interventions based on cognitive models such as learning maps have potential for supporting teachers in instructional decision-making and assessment of student mastery.
