Abstract

Black and other racialized students have historically faced exclusion from the Canadian Physiotherapy Academy (Heap, 1995a). This is due to systemic barriers rooted in whiteness and racism. Given the persistent over-representation of White individuals in the field of physiotherapy, there is a need to evaluate contemporary policies and procedures to examine how they create barriers for racialized students. This seminal study analyzes admissions policies from eight accredited Canadian universities offering physiotherapy programs. A critical discourse methodology within a theoretical lens of critical race is used to frame the research. The findings indicate that policy documents employ colour-blind, race-neutral, and meritocratic language with authoritative viewpoints, potentially impacting equitable admissions practices. Implications for admissions policy development and future research are discussed.
