Abstract

While surveys are often used in social science research, understanding a less-researched phenomenon may require an in-depth, qualitative investigation using open-ended interviews. This paper presents six strategies for conducting interviews more efficiently using an initial short survey through insights gained from implementing a US-based study. Over a span of 14 months using a sequential mixed-methods design, 959 respondents completed a brief survey (7-8 minutes), and 410 survey respondents participated in interviews. The survey served to generate new interest in the topic, Impostor Phenomenon, and enabled us to identify appropriate respondents to interview, reach a broad and diverse audience using multiple waves of anonymous data collection, keep follow-up telephone interviews focused, and promote participant-centered research practices.
