Nurturing Science Learning Amidst Adversity: Portraiture of Science Teaching With Refugee Students in Refugee Camps

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 106

Abstract

In the contemporary world of science, providing science education is imperative for all students. While a growing body of research in science education is increasing our understanding of science education for many marginalized populations, very little of that research has focused on refugee students, particularly in refugee camps. This study illustrates how refugee teachers in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh engage in science teaching with their Rohingya refugee students. Observations, field notes, and interviews were used to construct portraits that depicted the teaching practices of four refugee teachers in the Rohingya camps, highlighting how they and their co-teachers conduct science education in these challenging environments. These insights can inform future research on science teaching methods for refugee students.
