Abstract

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) emerged in the 1930s after the Great Recession as Americans sought additional education and training. This mixed-method research study examined PLA measures in the Florida College System (FCS). Twenty-eight institutions in the FCS were selected to investigate which of the eight PLA options, as documented in the literature, were offered. This grant-funded study provides insights from the quantitative surveys and qualitative data from different stakeholders including PLA coordinators, staff, faculty, and students. The research data were presented to the grant agency for advocacy at the national level. This study highlights the need to acknowledge the prior learning experiences of students and advocates for an efficacious educational change for a Just Education Renewal
