Aesthetic Possibilities Emerging From Collaboration: Insights From Black Women Artists and Educators

Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 706

Abstract

This presentation explores the aesthetic possibilities emerging from collaboration among Black women artists and educators, based on my dissertation research. By examining the artistic landscapes and pedagogical narratives of Sable Elyse Smith, Renée Cox, and Nanette Carter, alongside insights from focus groups with these artists and Black women art teachers, I uncover themes of empowerment, authenticity, and communal learning. Through a systematic approach to data analysis, I highlight the dynamic interplay between education and empowerment, the significance of individual agency, and the transformative potential of supportive communities. This session aims to contribute to the discourse on arts-based educational research, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in fostering educational equity and creative expression.
