The School Beneath Our Feet: A Story of Affinity, Haunting, and Sobrevivencia

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Building on a broader project on the everyday educational practices of youth at a newcomer school in New York City, this proposal explores how school community members collectively experience and negotiate threats of school closure. Co-located in an educational complex with a no excuses charter school, teachers and students shared stories and feelings about how forces of privatization sought to push them from the building. The proposal works through curriculums of survivance and haunting and uses speculative methodologies to see how sensations of encroachment and precarity are resisted through the making of school as a counterpublic. The proposal reveals ghostly threats on public schools and dynamic forms of repair as communities build schools of and for themselves.
