Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Nationally, new teachers are leaving the field at a rate of forty-four percent in their first five years of teaching. The attrition rate for new teachers in Alabama is over fifty percent. This qualitative case study focused on leadership supports in a national board certification cohort to improve teacher satisfaction and retention. Through confidential interviews, participants described outcomes gained from certification, reflected on leadership facilitators and barriers, and described their outlook on remaining in the field. The information gained from this study will be useful to leadership as they strive to help teachers reach personal and professional goals. The findings showed promise that the outcomes gained through the cohort model will increase teacher retention in schools and systems.
