Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Education faces a number of emotionally intense crises, including teacher burnout, teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, the politicization of educational funding, as well as attacks against inclusion of DEI initiatives in schools. Thus, this article examines how three secondary education preservice teachers' (PTs) exploration of past, present, and possible selves through poetry they have written regarding different crises facing future classrooms: 1) provides space for understanding different forms of crisis in a teacher education course; 2) allows PTs to self-reflect upon perspectives of crisis in their own lives; 3) prepare PTs to address these same crises in their future classrooms); and, 4) allow teacher educators to examine the emotional health and well-being of PTs.
