Abstract

Rural communities near state borders face during war an ongoing crisis with unique characteristics that set them apart from other environments. In the education domain, this crisis leads to ongoing disruptions to everyday life, resulting in the partial or complete suspension of educational activities for students and parents within formal and non-formal systems. Recent approaches to rural education have highlighted the significance of rural culture and values as foundations for place-based initiatives. Twelve in-depth interviews with leaders in diverse roles from the Israeli northern periphery were conducted. The current study offers a three dimensions model of local rural leadership: Authentic, communal and creative, demonstrating individuals with a strong connection to the community and the ability to act on its behalf.
