Experiences, Reflections, and Future Directions: A Panel with Justice-oriented Educators and Learners

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 113

Abstract

This panel brings together a diverse group of educators and learners committed to dreaming, designing, and doing justice in educational settings. The discussion will explore cross-paper themes of the session. Panelists include past participants of justice-oriented design projects local to Denver, including a learner. Panelists also include educators who are working on aligned projects in different contexts and levels of education. In particular, discussion will focus on how panelists’ understand and experience justice, as well as how they are applying Design Justice principles beyond assessment design into additional educational fields such as program evaluation. Panelists reflect on what they've learned through their journey with Design Justice, highlighting both expected and unexpected outcomes. They reflect on the challenges faced, insights gained, and the transformative potential they have witnessed in adopting justice-oriented assessment and Design Justice. The panel also addresses surprises and challenges encountered, including institutional resistance, the complexities of navigating power dynamics in co-design processes, and the ongoing work of liberating ourselves from deeply ingrained educational practices. Looking to the future, panelists share their visions for the continued evolution of Design Justice in education. Panelists offer guidance on resources, communities of practice, and potential collaborations to support this work. This panel aims to provide both theoretical insights and practical insights into how educators and learners are practicing justice in professions education.
