Embodying Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Wisdom From Taoist Philosophy and Contemplative Practices

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 107

Abstract

This paper focuses on Taoism which provides an elevated understanding of DEI: Diversity,
Equity, and Inclusion. The paper’s main objective is to expand on the energetic and spiritual
perspective of DEI, the ontological, existential, and contemplative dimensions. In Taoist
philosophy, we are all equal as we are all from the same Source, the primordial Qi that creates all
existence and permeates the universe. However, creations are also imbued with different
attributes and dispositions, such as people are born with various compositions of wood energy,
fire energy, water energy, metal energy, and earth energy. These different compositions manifest
as different abilities and personalities, but they are all necessary for the energetic universe to
propel and sustain life, and all have a role to play in the world. Thus, Taoism embraces diversity
and treats it not only as a social phenomenon but also as a cosmic necessity and reality.
However, our differences are not fixed forever, as we are all life travelers and have free wills to
live our lives; we take up different personalities and different energies to experience life and seek
final spiritual fulfillment, e.g., union with the Tao. Ultimately, all differences will be integrated
into the Tao.
