This review mapped the terrain of educational leadership preparation research and identified effective practices for designing equity-centered principal preparation programs (PPPs) in higher education. Analyzing 801 research articles from 1966 to 2023, the study employed topic modeling and thematic analysis to reveal key themes and practices. The review estimated 26 main topics in the corpus and found a growing interest in critical issues in leadership preparation research. Also, it provided essential practices such as integrating theory and practice, aligning with leadership standards, fostering instructional leadership, enhancing collaboration, and embedding equity within PPPs. These insights aim to address the underrepresentation of diverse leaders in education and promote culturally responsive practices to contribute to the ongoing discourse on equitable educational renewal.
