This study investigates the censorship of teaching practices in Brazil as a reflection of a global scenario of political and ideological polarization in education. Using a documentary and bibliographic methodology with thematic content analysis, 21 bills presented in the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil aimed at restricting teaching activities were analyzed. The analysis revealed two main axes of censorship, namely, a) gender and sexuality and b) indoctrination, which are justified under the arguments of the protection of ideological neutrality, a peaceful environment and family values. The attempts to censor teaching practices, despite a legislative framework that guarantees academic freedom and teaching autonomy, highlight the need to maintain and expand these guarantees to protect a truly democratic education.
