Abstract

This investigation describes the results of a recent empirical study investigating the leadership practices of 60 curriculum middle leaders in New Zealand secondary schools. The investigation focused on the extent to which their deliberate leadership practices supported the teachers in their department to engage in effective collaboration and develop resilience . A descriptive analysis of the practices middle leaders enacted and the challenges they faced has been undertaken utilizing quantitative and qualitative data gathered through a questionnaire in nine state-funded secondary schools. In an increasingly complex education environment of ongoing policy change in curriculum and assessment, these middle leaders reported a range of strategies they implemented to lead teachers within a cohesive and resilient curriculum department.
