Beating the Odds: The Role of Individual and School Growth Mindsets in Resilience

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

The current study aimed to examine the extent to which students’ growth mindset, schools’ growth mindset, and their interaction are associated with the success of socio-economically disadvantaged students. Participants included 612,004 secondary school students from 80 regions. The data were analyzed using multilevel logit regression analyses. Both students’ and schools’ growth mindsets were positively associated with students’ academic resilience. Importantly, the interaction between students’ and schools’ growth mindsets was also related to students’ academic resilience, such that students who had a growth mindset and were surrounded by schoolmates who also had a growth mindset enjoyed the highest levels of resilience. The study highlights the need to pay attention to both an individual’s growth mindset and that of their peers.
