Abstract

Researchers have called for a comprehensive framework that engages with critical use and ethics of the algorithms of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED). We provide an analysis of the current landscape of challenges in understanding the layered biases with AIED and strategic approaches to overcome these hurdles through a conceptual framework for AIED practices and applications. Working across disciplinary, epistemological, and methodological orientations to forge deeper connections in our field, this conceptual paper, written from the lens of an education technology leadership and a critical media studies scholar, speaks to the challenges we face in education with the exponential uses of artificial intelligence (AI) and the ways in which we can use criticality to empower students when using AI.
