Abstract

Addressing the challenge of aligning language curricula with information-age workforce demands of the higher-order skills (21st-century and social-emotional skills), this mixed-methods study introduced an analog problem-solving card game as an educational tool to simulate practical language. A total of 22 Chinese language learners in a language immersion program gathered together and played the game in Chinese language. Results and findings from the gameplay recordings and perception surveys indicated that problem-solving games provided an immersive environment for students to apply practical listening, speaking, and reading language skills and constantly showcase various higher-order skills during play. The playful learning approach contributes to crafting an inclusive environment and providing equitable language and skills practice opportunities for learners with diverse needs.
