Understanding Testimonios Methodology: A Comprehensive Exploration of What It Is and Is Not, and How to Do It

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This paper explores the intricate threads that constitute the nature of testimonios methodology, which is rooted in Latin American culture and feminist traditions. Testimonios give voice to marginalized communities, originating as a literacy model to combat political oppression. It has significantly influenced various movements, including the Chicano movement. Despite its popularity, some questions remain unanswered: What is testimonios research, and what is it not? What distinguishes it from similar approaches (narrative inquiry, autobiography, autoethnography, oral history, and participatory action research)? What are some practical steps to apply testimonios as a methodology? This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of conducting testimonios research. Providing useful clarification and guidance on its application for novices are the contributions this paper aims to make.
