Abstract

Students with disabilities (SWD) make up 17% of all students in public education as of the 2020-2021 school year, which amounts to over 8.4 million students in the United States, not all of whom are in segregated settings. When presented with statements about people with learning disabilities that are rooted in ableist beliefs, do teachers agree or disagree more frequently? In this pilot study, a sample of N=53 PreK-12th grade teachers completed the Perceptions of Students with Learning Disabilities Survey, and we found that, overall, teachers’ beliefs varied in the questions on the survey, but there were concerning findings on several questions regarding ableist beliefs about learning disabilities.
