"Die Deutsche Stunde”: The Pioneering Pedagogy of Ilsedore Edse’s German Educational Television and Radio Programs

Abstract

This project conducts life history research on Dr. Ilsedore Edse (1918-2015) (pronounced: Ill-suh-dora Ed-suh), a distinguished faculty member at the Ohio State University who made pioneering contributions through her leadership in the German department’s educational radio and television program, Die Deutsche Stunde (The German Hour) from 1960-1988. Ilsedore’s work not only enriched the academic environment at Ohio State but also played a crucial role in promoting German language and culture through innovative educational media outreach that spanned the globe. This project aims to explore her life and legacy, and examine the impact of her efforts in fostering intercultural understanding through cultural education.
