Navigating New Terrains: Immigrant Parental Challenges and the Power of Social Bonds

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This case study explored the experiences of immigrant parents in the U.S., focusing on the complexities of migration, adaptation, parenting, and educating their children. While studies have looked at general immigrant parents’ experiences, few studies have examined the unique struggles of immigrant graduate/postgraduate student parents. Through in-depth interviews with three immigrant graduate/postgraduate student parents, common challenges were identified in adapting to the U.S. and navigating new educational systems. Utilizing social capital theory, I found social connections and support systems were crucial despite their different immigrant backgrounds. Additionally, their stories reflected significant resilience in their work, studies, and children’s education. This study describes individual experiences and does not aim to make generalizable claims beyond these cases.
