Abstract

The prevalence of educational anxiety among Chinese parents has garnered significant attention as a pivotal topic in parenting research. In 2021, the Chinese government enacted the Double Reduction Policy, aimed at alleviating students' academic pressures and curtailing the proliferation of after-school tutoring. Nevertheless, parents’ educational anxiety remains fostered a distinctive educational landscape in China. To gain insights into this phenomenon, our study conducted in-depth interviews with 12 parents residing in three premier mainland Chinese cities. This qualitative exploration identified four pivotal influence factors that shape and amplify this anxiety. Our findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on the intricate interplay between social policy frameworks, peer dynamics, educational anxiety, and shadow education, offering a holistic understanding of this complex issue.
