Abstract

Much research has been dedicated to the impact of out-of-school removal, in-school removal, and counseling or other talk-based disciplinary measures. However, few studies directly compared their individual-level consequences. We examined differences in the number of total and violent office disciplinary referrals (ODRs) following different measures taken after a violent ODR. Talk-based measures predicted 33% more ODRs and 79% more violent ODRs relative to out-of-school removal, but in-school removal measures predicted 6% fewer ODRs and 33% fewer violent ODRs. Similar results were obtained controlling for school district and year. These results suggest that at least when responding to violent ODRs, in-school suspensions could be effective in reducing recurring violent behavioral problems in schools.
