Exploring the Potential of Drill Music as an Avenue for Student Self-Expression

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Centering interviews and a critical discourse analysis of a student-created drill song, this study seeks to offer considerations for educators to better understand students’ relationship with drill music. Findings of this study reveal that the student’s relationship with drill music as an artform and outlet offered them the opportunity to discuss their understandings of communalism, engage in emotional exploration and cultivate individualism and self-empowerment.
