Cross-Cultural Measurement Invariance of SMUP Across North America and Asia (Poster 49)

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

The study aimed to examine cross-cultural measurement invariance (MI) of Social Media User Perception Scale (SMUP), which measures users’ varying perspectives of SM platforms including constraints, social exploration, and social connection. Sample consisted of 547 university students and professionals recruited through convenience sampling from the continents of North America and Asia. Cross-cultural MI was tested using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) via Mplus. Latent mean scores were then compared between cultural groups. Results showed that the 3-factor structure was confirmed. Scalar invariance across culture was supported, and compared to North American sample, Asian sampled scored significantly lower in Constraints. The SMUP holds promise to facilitate cross-cultural comparison research.
