Abstract

While recognizing the benefits and acceptance of GenAI tools among higher education students, existing studies rarely address how individual capabilities influence their effective use. This study explores this gap using a framework based on the Information System Success Model and the Expectation-Confirmation Model. Analysis of data from 1,448 GenAI tool users in Chinese universities shows that students’ capabilities positively affect the information quality of GenAI tools. Information quality, in turn, impacts students’ intention to continue using these tools through satisfaction. Multi-group analysis indicates consistency across elite and non-elite universities. These findings highlight the need to develop core capabilities to ensure effective use of GenAI tools and address potential disparities based on student capabilities.
