Abstract

Higher education institutions in Taiwan and many Asian countries are encouraged to offer courses with English as the medium of instruction (EMI). However, such a policy has revealed a critical issue: a shortage of qualified teachers. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) provide opportunities to transform language education, offering personalized and authentic content. This study uses experimental designs to explore the learning effects of AI-assisted EMI courses from the perspective of cognitive load theory and learning anxiety experienced by Taiwanese students. Physiological signals, specifically the power spectral density (PSD) of brain waves, will measure cognitive load and cognitive performance. Frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) will assess foreign language anxiety. This research aims to address current challenges in bilingual/EMI education and enhance teaching effectiveness.
