Toward a Deeper Understanding of Learning and Development in Soccer Ecosystems: A Multi-Case Study

Abstract

Soccer is projected to be the fastest growing sport in the United States for the next ten years. Beyond the excitement of the game, soccer teams are key out of school spaces for learning and growth for youth and adolescents. Research suggests that the leadership and teaching in soccer settings varies significantly, with some settings serving as rich spaces for development and others as negative influence on the educative process. Our multi-case qualitative study examines how coaches, leaders, families and teachers collaborate to sustain learning and holistic youth development in soccer settings. We examined five cases and, employing bioecological developmental theory, arrived at key findings and insights that can inform out of school learning environments.
