Historically Relevant Science Pedagogy: An Interdisciplinary and Critically Conscious Approach to Teaching Any Content

Wed, April 23, 10:50am to 12:20pm MDT (10:50am to 12:20pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Historically Relevant Science Pedagogy gives non-science teachers and educators an interdisciplinary approach to including students’ lived experiences within their classroom. As students and educators we experience science daily and the impact of politicians who are not using science to benefit the people. A framework such as Historically Relevant Science Pedagogy, which was built based on the expertise of Black women science teachers gives us the space to engage in social action by having a cause to confront within their community and beyond. During this presentation, audience members will observe examples of the framework and be invited to dialogue about how to use the framework to help our pre-service infuse science in their classrooms and to center critical consciousness.
