Inside and Outside Mentoring/Coaching Practices: Veteran and New Associates’ Approaches to Supporting Beginning Teachers

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Induction programs that utilize high impact practices, such as inside and outside mentoring, create pathways to mitigate teacher attrition. Building on Kavanagh et al.’s (2023) study examining mentors’ perspectives on the inside/outside mentoring practices employed with pre-service teachers, this study utilized a single embedded case study (Miles et al., 2020; Yin, 2017) to examine similarities and differences between the inside and outside mentoring practices that veteran mentors / coaches (Associates) and new Associates use with beginning teachers. Through analysis it was apparent that regardless of experience, Associates utilized more outside coaching practices than inside practices. Findings suggest opportunities exist for new and veteran Associates to grow in their use of inside practices.
