Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study examines the impact of burnout among sign language interpreters on deaf college students' educational experiences. Conducted through an online survey with 280 interpreters and 21 deaf students, it highlights the challenges faced by marginalized interpreters, including those who are disabled or LGBTQIA+. Findings indicate significant burnout rates among these groups, which exacerbate the interpreter shortage and hinder deaf students' access to quality education. The research underscores the need for targeted support to retain diverse interpreters, ensuring equitable educational opportunities for deaf students. This study contributes to policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in postsecondary education.
