Grounding Chatbot Development in Human Values: A Value-Sensitive Design Approach (Poster 11)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

We leverage a large language model (GPT-4) to develop chatbots that facilitate systems understanding of climate change’s impact, within a high school environmental science curriculum. We apply Value-Sensitive Design to guide the chatbot design, focusing on empirical, conceptual, and technical investigations. We conduct an empirical investigation to explore the values that motivate students and educators to engage with the chatbots. Through a conceptual exploration, we ground values in ethical AI design and environmental education research. Findings illuminate considerations for the chatbots to support students’ identity development, as well as mediate their relationships with others and with the environment. We map the values onto preliminary design principles. Our work demonstrates how to promote ethical designs and human values in education technologies.
