Abstract

This pioneering study examines the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picturebook Award-winning books by exploring the major themes through content analysis. Five themes emerged from the 47 books analyzed:1) interpersonal relationships; 2) character traits; 3) animals, plants, and the environment; 4) childhood life; and 5) peace. Specifically, the interpersonal relationships between grandparents and grandchildren were predominantly presented. The study also found that character traits were highly depicted, with self-consciousness and goal orientation being the most highlighted. Surprisingly, the theme of childhood life was less emphasized. Investigating these award-winning books is important, it fills a gap in the current literature regarding research on Chinese original children’s picturebooks, and opens a window for cross-cultural communications to enhance cultural diversity in children’s literature.
