Abstract

This paper presents preliminary results from a broad investigation of the role of collegiate jazz programs in jazz scenes and utilizes this lens to examine how a university can play the role of an arts anchor institution in the arts ecosystem of a mid-size city. The paper focuses on one stage finding from a larger study funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Utilizing case study methodology, we found the concept of value reflected in the relationships between the university and its performing arts conservatory and between the conservatory and the wider jazz community. This value is best expressed as a “crown jewel” relationship and this paper suggests important best practices to all those in the arts.
