Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 703

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent ideologies and logics of racism are embedded in school-based athletic programs in the Northeastern U.S. This project focuses on these research questions:
How do leaders involved with high school athletics understand and experience the ways race, racism, and bigotry are part of the fabric of high school athletics?

What do leaders involved with high school student athletics see as ways schools/ districts/ regional athletic organizations can work to alleviate the burden of racism and bigotry?

This qualitative study used in-person interviews with coaches, athletic directors, and administrators. Initial findings show leaders have different understanding of racism and bigotry in high school athletics depending on the context where they work.
