Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 304

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate to what extent ideologies and logics of racism are embedded in school-based athletic programs in the Northeastern U.S. This project focuses on these research questions:
What are the experiences and perspectives of high school student athletes of color with race, racism, and bigotry in their athletic participation?
What do high school student athletes of color see as ways schools/ districts/ regional athletic organizations can work to alleviate the burden of racism/bigotry?

This qualitative study used in-person interviews and focus groups with high school student-athletes of color. Initial findings show high school athletes experience race and racism in various ways and have suggestions for addressing the racism and bigotry they experienced.
