Longitudinal College Outcomes: Women, SES Background, and a Mixed Method Approach

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Research examining longitudinal college outcomes is scant, particularly for women and students from lower-SES backgrounds. In response, this mixed-method study examines data from 57 women over a 20-year timeframe. We find that while participants’ family incomes entering college were significantly different based on SES background, their estimated salaries 20 years after graduation show no significant differences. Further, there are no significant differences in degree attainment based on SES background. Additionally, qualitatively, the women’s descriptions of their social class positions are similar, and they see themselves as middle to upper-middle class. These data illustrate the continuing value of securing a college education.
